Whether you run an eCommerce business or sell items online as a sideline to your day job in the UK, you and the entire community of online retailers are the reason we remain to be the “nation of shopkeepers”.
While there are many online businesses that stemmed from careful planning, there are also those that were realised out of necessity.
The result of a survey conducted by ePages on about 1,012 adult Britons reveals that 44% of the respondents sell products or services online to supplement their income.
Meanwhile, 30% of the respondents said their long-term goal is to be able to sell stuff online on a regular basis.
As we went over the statistics, we detected an entrepreneurial mindset among the Millennials, but we can’t be sure if it’s the same with their predecessors, as 54% of those who said they made extra money by selling stuff online are in the age range of 25 to 34 years old.
Everyone Loves Online Retail
More and more British people are drawn to selling online because of the accessibility of cloud-based software, growing popularity of online marketplaces, and easy payment methods as well as various payment gateways to choose from.
More than 50% of ePages’s respondents said they can set up an online store by themselves, while 16% of them think the whole process is going to be easy.
In relation to the expenses they could incur, 71% of the survey respondents believe that the tools they will need in setting up an online store are inexpensive.
According to Wilfried Beeck, CEO at ePages:
“The survey suggests a high participation level — today a large proportion of Britons are both keen and confident to become online merchants whenever the need arises.”
Who’s up for a Physical Store?
When ePages asked their respondents if running a physical store has ever crossed their minds, half of them said they prefer to run an online store.
Twenty-seven percent of them said it would be nice if they could sell online and in a physical store, while only 10% said they’d rather stick to a bricks-and-mortar shop.
Majority of the respondents believe that they could sell more if they do it in cyberspace, but 39% of them would like to explore omnichannel selling and its many potentials.
Only 8% of the respondents prefer to sell solely in a physical store.
Now, that explains why the Internet abounds with UK retailers selling all sorts of products and services.
