The Perks of Selling Lightweight on Amazon

The Perks of Selling Lightweight on Amazon

Howdy !

As the calendar shuffles closer to Christmas, you’re generating higher sales on your Magento site as well as on Amazon, while the latter’s fulfilment centres get busier by the day.

When it comes to fulfilling orders, are you confined to the standard Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) programme or taking advantage of FBA Small and Light too?

If you have small and inexpensive items in your inventory, then FBA Small and Light is something which you would want to consider for your business.

Amazon came up with FBA Small and Light for small items that cost less than £7, have dimensions of 30x22x2.4 centimetres and weigh less than or equal to 250 grams.

By purchasing your products which are enrolled in the Small and Light programme, members of Amazon Prime can enjoy free 1 to 3 days delivery service while non-Prime customers get free standard 3 to 5 days delivery on orders amounting to or exceeding £20.

Because FBA Small and Light doesn’t require a minimum purchase order for free shipping, expect small and cheap items in your inventory to disappear from FBA shelves at a faster rate.

What Qualifies as Small and Light?

As its name suggests, FBA Small and Light applies to any small and lightweight product.

Examples of which are as follows:

  • Earphone or lightweight headphone
  • Hair clip
  • Ballpoint pen
  • Mouse pad
  • Smartphone case
  • Ring box
  • Compact mirror
  • Facial cloth
  • Hair brush
  • Charm bracelet

The fulfilment fees on these products are smaller as compared to those that are in the standard FBA programme.

In standard FBA your fulfilment and storage fees are calculated based on the size and weight of your product.

That means if you sold a vacuum cleaner and a 15” laptop on Amazon through FBA, they will be charged different FBA fees as they differ in size and weight.

How to Add Small and Light Products

To qualify for Amazon’s Small and Light programme, your products should comply with the requirements that were set by Amazon Services Europe Business Solutions Agreement.

Like the standard FBA, you can add products from any Amazon category, except for Books, Music, Video Games and DVDs, to the Small and Light programme as long as they meet the required size, weight and price set on it.

If you want to enrol the same product into both standard FBA and Small and Light, make sure that you have a unique SKU for each fulfilment programme.

Has Amazon’s Small and Light programme been beneficial to your business? We would love to hear about it in the comments below.

To your continued success,

Dave & Matt
