Tutorial Videos are so lengthy

The videos are designed for basic basic users who have no knowledge of anything, most of the users have a background in basic computing, no?

Hi Jeffrey,

We only assume in our current tutorials that you have an existing eBay business. Everything else we don’t take for granted.

I would say a large portion of our members have never got hands on with domain names and web hosting before or FTP etc which is why we take the time to take them through it slowly to not bombard them with too much information for the first time.

Then Magento and M2E are beasts in their own right so once again we take nothing for granted as we don’t want users to become disillusioned and give up with it, as we know the system works.

Can I ask which tutorials in particular you were unhappy with the length of and any areas you thought we could miss.

Try to think of the tutorial your parents or grand parents may need and you will see the angle we are coming at of not wanting to lose anybody or leave anyone behind.

In my opinion the video tutorials cater for all levels of expertise and great to refer back to and you can also skip sections that you do not need.

I find myself going back and referring to specific tutorials as a reference to ensure I am doing the task correctly. In these circumstances it would be very nice to be able to accelerate the playback by 2 or 3 times.
Thanks Dave & Matt for a great resource.

I do go back to the videos myself at times on something I had not done in a while. The 2x or 3x accelerator would be nice, but I do usually find pretty quickly the part that I need. One other suggestion might be a “Quick Vid” concept where specific sections of the videos are available for quick playback in a special section on the site. Maybe make that section only available to Premium members as they are more likely to have watched the entire videos.

I must admit the tutorials are far too slow for me and some are really quite long and I couldn’t have bared to watch them all online at normal speed. I hope UE don’t mind, but I’ve sometimes ended up resorting to techniques to download them so I can watch at my own pace using VLC player which can then play them at any speed I like without distorting the sound.

I find that just under twice speed is best and I’m able to speed up even more for obvious bits or when I’m trying to locate a particular piece of information again, or slow them down and repeat anything much more easily for any more detailed configuration parts.

I really think UE should offer the video tutorials as downloads for premium users, then they become much more useful reference resources that don’t always need an internet connection to view them. Then again, I can appreciate maybe why UE don’t want people downloading them as that is one of their main products and wouldn’t want people abusing the system and/or the need to subscribe.

I’m not a starter at internet config by any means having set up quite complex CMS’s, written CSS etc, hosted sites, configured unmanaged servers and the like before, but for the eCommerce, Magento and other tips you both talk about, the videos are really useful so I’m working my way through all of them when I have the time or need. Even for the basic things like e.g. configuring FTP, I watch them just for the extra little tips you might pop in.

I think even if I were starting out in the world of eCommerce, faster and therefore shorter would be better (people can always pause and repeat) but I appreciate you are needing to accommodate complete beginners and you definitely do a good job at that. That said, I haven’t added up the hours of videos you have available but it must be at least 50 hours worth so far and that takes considerably longer to actually plough through at normal speed whilst also following along with our own configurations.

I understand YouTube has some form of limited speed up/slow down these days, but that wouldn’t help the videos UE have that are not on YouTube, but also the sound is not normalised so everyone sounds deep and slow or fast and like a chipmunk. Nothing beats being able to view as local files played through a dedicated (sound adjusting) player such as VLC.

Hey Guys,

I really appreciate all the feedback so far, it’s really helpful and hopefully we can help address some of these points.

Regarding downloads I see why this would be beneficial for some things, but for the vast majority of the guides you would need Magento up as well if you were to follow us along in which case you’d need to be online anyway.

Obviously there is the whole torrent issue too which would not be desirable for us as a business, bearing in mind how little we charge for the Premium membership.

Having a 2 x , 3 x play option would be beneficial for some, i’m not sure how we can host that I will have to talk with Matt and see how this could be implemented and it it’s feasible right now.

As always please keep coming with the suggestions, with your help we can make the site and content better :)

That one isn’t possible with Vimeo.

I understand the comments on some of the videos being slow for some users, however do note they are specifically designed for less experienced users.

Specifically #1 Have knowledge of eBay #2 Have no knowledge of Magento.

If you’re more experienced with Magento or have developer experience, then the tutorials we have will definitely feel to be too “slow” for you because you don’t meet #1 or #2. We needed to start somewhere and #1 & #2 seemed the best place to start so we could focus on the cool stuff if that makes sense.

Any online speed adjustment for videos is never going to work, it’s usually limited to just 2x, 3x or half speed and doesn’t have the granularity one would want. On top of that, the sound gets slowed or sped up in a way that sounds ridiculous. Only with something like how VLC does it can it work (keeps the sound pitch normal).

I don’t think you need to fear providing a download button for the videos, like any software or digital resource there are usually ways people can download or circumvent protection or even encryption, and there will always be idiots that don’t pay and rip stuff off via Torrent etc., but for the honest ones of us out there, we respect your product and wouldn’t do things like that. If I was after just your videos, I would have subscribed for one month, downloaded the lot and cancelled my subscription. (BTW I do subscribe monthly because I couldn’t afford a year’s worth in one go)

To me, the main value of what you provide (and what we pay for after watching the video tutorials) is the subscription to Widget Chimp and it’s template. If we lose the ability to access that then we’ve lost our nice listings. Apart from our supporting the principles of what you provide at UE (good honest banter, advice and help), then just hearing about some of the things I could do with an online business has been interesting.

Much of what you provide and say is geared towards selling multiple lines of thousands of items, but what I sell is more one-off collectables. While it’s all a lot of hard work for each individual listing, it’s all I can do right now and learning about some of the techniques and services for dealing with thousands of items for sale is somewhat overwhelming at times but at the same time intriguing. Much of the information you have provided is still nonetheless useful to me even though I’m nowhere near the big-league of selling (yet! – just need to find what it is I can or want to sell)

I love how long they are. If have bits I am familiar with and just need a specific aspect without having to watch the whole clip I scroll down and refer to the screenshots. You don’t get this much info anywhere else for next to nothing. I am very grateful for the work put it
