Just wondering how customising Magento effects updates.
I’ve used Zen Cart in the past and when any of the core files were edited, or when any add-on overwrote core files it caused problems when a new version of Zen Cart came out as the new files had to be compared in detail with the edited files.
I’m assuming it’s the same with Magento? If so, to extensions often overwrite the original files or is it just custom edits?
Or to put things another way, what precautions need to be taken before upgrading to a new version?
Oh, and one more question, are add-ons also open source that we are free to make changes to?
This can happen with poorly written extensions, but shouldn’t because of the way Magento is designed as it has a fall back system (for both the core and with theming) and an extension system, where a new extension “extends” an existing core function, rather than hacking apart the core like I’ve been known to do frequently with OpenCart.
By the way, the tool to do this quickly with a site like ZenCart is called Beyond Compare, there is a free trial and a license is just $30 for one user. See here http://www.scootersoftware.com…..reinfo.php
