Hi,
I am tempted to set to Global when creating a new attribute – as I am not very sure what the consequences are of choosing Website or Store View.

Is there an important difference between these choices?

Thanks

Howdy Steve,

Yes there is a difference.

Borrowing the text from the Magento wiki:

The possible scope settings are: [STORE], [WEBSITE], and [GLOBAL]. Any item with the scope of [STORE] can have a different value for each view. For example, a product name and description has the scope of [STORE] and might have a different entry for each language. However, some configuration settings — such as postal code — are [GLOBAL] in scope, because the same value is used throughout the system. The [WEBSITE] scope also applies to the entire site, including all views. (Unlike other editions of Magento, each Magento Go store is limited to one website.)

What this really means to you is that if you have a setting that you are likely to want to change, say into a different language or for another eBay account, then you should select the “Store” option.

Listing titles are a prime example, along with eBay item specific attributes. You are likely to want to change these for different languages or different eBay accounts.

However global attributes will have the same value across all store views and sites.

An example of this is an ASIN, as that should stay common. Errrr…. Although that said ASIN is not the best example as you may want to have duplicate listings on Amazon because products are duplicated and you may want the ASIN to change. Can’t think of a better example for global at this moment in time :/

Clear as a cup of mud?

Matt
