Most of my configurable products have child products that are samples at a very low price – and mostly nearly the same price. That means that the “From” prices shown in the product grid (and in the layered nav) are pretty meaningless.
It would be more helpful to customers to set a default pack size – ie a default child product – and show that price in the product grid and layered nav. That way, the prices would helpfully show the customers the relative price of the products.
Alternatively, I have “Price Band” as an attribute on most products (but not all) and I could display the value in the grid instead of the From price.
What do you think would be best? And how would I go about it?
Yes, I would agree it’s completely pointless to see your products that are eventually of the lowest price or are almost the same showing up in the navigation
Aside from modifying the range of price filters in the navigation, you can make more out of your products. That’s possible by using Magento‘s “Related, Upsell, and Cross- sell ” features.

Thanks for your response.
I was just giving a suggestion on what you could do other than modifying Magento‘s default “FROM” or price range. But I do understand why you’d want to have the individual prices to appear.
Let’s keep this thread open for others to contribute and so you’ll find a way to do that.
