I have been watching the video on attributes and saw that you have suggested these attributes, we have an agency doing some work for us and they asked why this was the case instead of just taking the name from the channel storeview?

Hey Nick

We recommend the naming convention purely from an ease of use point of view. By using the att_ we automatically can tell it is an attribute that we created. That way it reduces the risk of us having two brands or two colour attributes.

The reason for having eby and amz is again to differentiate the marketplaces. Chances are you may want to structure your listing titles differently on eBay and Amazon to appeal to the different audiences.

If you get to the stage where you are bulk importing products, and you want to bulk update these attributes, then being able to differentiate them in Excel will make life SOOO much easier down the line.

Does that help?

Dave

I think i worded my question badly! They are asking why use an attribute at all, why not just use the “product name”, they said for each storeview the “product name” can be different, so for our Ebay sales we would just use the product name in the ebay storeview

Hi Nick,

Apologies, I got the wrong end of the question there :)

I Just spoke with Matt, he just said “Clarity“.

The name attribute is meant for the Magento website, if you’re selling on eBay or Amazon then you’re likely to want a completely difderent title.

The thing is that the moment you start using multiple store views and websites the layering can become less than transparent whena ll you want to do is have a separate title for ebay or Amazon rather than faffing with store views (also think about Magmi for importing product data as well).

It just makes it easier to understand and see what’s going on.

You could of course use multiple storeviews and change them at that level and re-use the name attribute. We just feel that a separate attribute makes it soo much clearer to use everyday.
