I have been trying to generate a sitemap for my website and have been receiving the following error:
XML Parsing Error: no element found Location: file:///var/www/html/sitemap.xml Line Number 2, Column 1717
When I visit my websites sitemap at fs1inc.com/sitemap.xml it generates without any issues. However, when I load the file directly from the server it displays this error. I came across this issue after I noticed that only 17 pages out of 30,000+ were being indexed on Googles Search Console. I’ve tried deleting my original sitemap, disabling/enabling the sitemap plugin and then generating a new sitemap, however this produced the same error message. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?
I’m no expert but it looks like the sitemap it has found has an error in it which means not everything is getting found.
Have you tried navigating to that file in the back end and deleting it and then trying to do another one from fresh?
Alternatively could be a question to ask your hosting provider to see if they know what could be causing this.
