new categories are created even if they already exist on importing simple and configurable products

Hi,

This connected to a previous post regarding categories. But slightly different, it seems whenever I import any products the category that the product should be placed in doesn’t happen.

The import just creates a new category of the same name. See here: http://screencast.com/t/o25erhsZhDRh

I turned off the category importer on magmi, that didn’t help as the category and sub category (as I tested again with a Category/SubCategory) was just created again at the end of the category tree in Magento. But this time didn’t add any products to the new categories it created.

So I am totally lost as to what could be going on.

Hi Rob,

That happened because the category you enter would have been MDPE Fittings whereas it should have been MDPE Water Supply Pipe and Fittings/MDPE Fittings which then would have entered it into the existing category.

Hope this helps

Hi,

So I have tested, and yes the product now imports into the correct category without a new category being created, but it also imports into Root Category and sub category and sub sub category.

Even though I only included the Sub and Sub/sub category. See here: http://screencast.com/t/VJbZL31yyLLL

And here in Magento back end: http://screencast.com/t/GWiK9SBsxC

In an ideal world I would prefer just the configurable product imported into the category, but that may not be possible.

I am also thinking does it really matter? As the product is in the correct categories, it is just displaying differently in magento product admin to previous imports, which I believe a different import mechanism was used. ?
