I don’t understand how to use the “Is Anchor” Yes/No switch on each category … and I think that may be causing my page display problems.

Does the “Is Anchor” switch just control whether or not the products in that category can be used in “Shop By” (Price / Brand etc) choices ?

My other problem is that we have a product structure like this :-

Top Level Category –> Brand Sub-Category (x 3) –> Design Type Sub-Sub-Category (x Loads)

When I go to the web site and click on one of the Design Sub-Sub-Categories, it displays just the products in that category – Great !

But, … if I click on a Brand Sub-Category, it displays all the products within the subordinate Design Sub-Sub-Categories

… and, of course, if I click on the Top Level Category, it displays all of the products in all the brand sub-categories.

Clearly, this is a major problem, because we are talking about a page containing about 1,000 products and it takes a long long long time to load.

What I expected / want to happen was that I could design the site so that at the Top level Category, I would have a list of the next level Brand Sub-categories and, maybe, an image to go with each.

Is there anyone out there with a magic wand ?

Hey Andrew,

I have just asked Matt on this one but he is having some funky internet issues so this is his reply.

Hi Andrew,

From what you’ve mentioned, this sounds like you’ll want to leverage customised categories with a slughtly different slant to what we’ve expained in the tutorials.

On the display settings tab for a category, we showed you how you can apply a static block and how to set the page to show products AND the custom block.

From what you’ve explained, what you could do is leverage a custom block for that category, but set it not to show the products (maybe a slider perhaps) and have that as an entry category into the sub categories.

This would need you to create a static block for the category and this will give you the level of control I believe you’re looking for.

Try it with one category and see how you get on.

Also there is a maximum depth setting for the categories, so if you have loads and loads of categories, you can set a maximum depth and this will affect the left hand menu bar. I believe this is in the system > config > infortis > menu settings area

I’ve set up a test block for one of the categories and used the Upsell slider code to display sample products from within that category …

… see http://www.dragonsandgifts.com…..-kits.html

Seems to work OK … I’m still chewing on the options before I finalise the design.

Is there a way of getting the left sidebar menu showing on the product page ?

I’ve tried turning the option on in System>Configuration>Infortis Extensions>Menu>Enable Sidebar Menu … but seems to have no effect (see attached)

Any suggestions ?

Hmmm this is a strange one, have you re-indexed the site Andrew after making the changes, if not then try that and see if that has an effect?

Let me know if it doesn’t fix it and we will investigate a little further :)

Hey Andrew,

I have just double checked our system settings and we dont have the left category enabled on ours for the product pages. I have asked Matt to see why your settings aren’t having the desired effect.

Changed settings on my system to be the same as yours … works as expected … left sidebar menu shown on category and sub-category (but not on Product Page)

Then changed settings again to Enable Menu left sidebar on Product Page … and nothing changes (yes, I did flush caches and re-index) before and after all changes.

So, I’m a bit stuck now.

I’ve forwarded this on to Matt to have a look at, I had a look around the settings and couldn’t see anything else that could be affecting this.

I think we must be missing something somewhere…probably a setting hiding :/

Still chewing on this to see if I can get a breakthough so here is more “evidence”.

Left hand sidebar is enabled for Product Page … but does not appear.

Top Level Category (with subordinate Sub-categories) displays sub-categories (for that category ONLY) in sidebar menu (see screen shot)
Top-Level-Category.pngImage Enlarger

Bottom Level Category and individual product pages do not show menu at all.

I’m trying to replicate the functionality of the sidebar on our old web site (built on Sellerdeck, not Magento) in which the whole menu appeared on all pages – so enabling easy navigation from anywhere in the product hierarchy (see sample screenshot of old site)

I also found some reference to sidebar menu control in the Ultimo user Guide (Page 144) – see attached screenshot, in which control of the sidebar would seem to require the insertion of some code (somewhere ???)

All help welcome ‘cos I’m fresh out of ideas !!

I searched through the Ultimo comments section in Themeforest and found the following response from infortis:

Yes, sidebar menu can be enabled also for product pages (see menu settings in the admin).

But first you would need to enable the left sidebar for your products (layout of product page can be changed in product settings individually for each product, of course you can also mass update all products at a time).

To test this, edit one of your products and click on “Design” in the left column and near the bottom of the main column change “Page Display” change to “2 columns with left bar”.

Once you’ve confirmed that wil work you can create/edit your local.xml file to modify all product pages in bulk. (Be aware this is a “nerd level” change, but not to difficult to perform if you can read a bit of code).

Cheers,

Steve

Magic !! The sidebar menu has landed … see the wonderous screen shot attached !!
The-Sidebar-Menu-has-landed-.pngImage Enlarger

With many thanks to Steve for suggestion, this has been set up by setting the Design up on one product only.

Now I need help to fix this on all pages.

Where do I find the “local.xml” file … and, once found, what would I be looking for to change ?

All help, as ever, gratefully received.Smile

To change product pages en-mass is a relatively simple exercise, but you do need to be very careful following this procedure.

A) First a couple of assumptions:
1). You are using the Ultimo theme
2). You have filezilla or similar installed on your computer
3). You are using notepad++ or similar to edit text files

B) Now we are going to find your local.xml file
1). Start up filezilla or your favorite ftp program and login into your server.
2). Navigate to app > design > frontend > ultimo > default > layout
3). In this folder you will see a file called local.xml
4). Right click on the file and select view/edit
5). The file should now open in notepad++
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NOW BEFORE YOU DO ANTHING ELSE MAKE A COPY OF YOUR local.xml file as follows:
In your filezilla window right click on local.xml and select Rename. I suggest local-orig.xml. Making a copy of this file will enable you to get back to your original version just in case you make an error when editing this file.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

C) Back to notepad++
1). Select Search > Find…
2). In the Find what: enter PRODUCT VIEW and click on Find Next
3). You should now see the line PRODUCT VIEW highlighted

<!– PRODUCT VIEW %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% –>

<catalog_product_view>

<!– Change default template for product view. IMPORTANT: the same as in ‘review_product_list’. –>

<reference name="root">

<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/1column.phtml</template></action>

</reference>

4). Make a copy of line containing page/1column.phtml and paste it immediately below

<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/1column.phtml</template></action>
<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/1column.phtml</template></action>

5). Now edit the second line changing page/1column.phtml to page/2columns-left.phtml so we have

<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/1column.phtml</template></action>
<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/2columns-left.phtml</template></action>

6). Move back to the line above and comment out the line so it looks like this:

<!–<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/1column.phtml</template></action>–>

7). So now this section of code looks like this:

<!– PRODUCT VIEW %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% –>

<catalog_product_view>

<!– Change default template for product view. IMPORTANT: the same as in ‘review_product_list’. –>

<reference name="root">

<!–<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/1column.phtml</template></action>–>
<action method="setTemplate"><template>page/2columns-left.phtml</template></action>

</reference>

8). Save the file and move back to Filezilla. Now you’ll see a popup asking you if you want to upload the to your server. Click on Yes.

D). Back in Magento Admin
1). Clear your cache: System > Cache Management

E). Back to your website
1). Navigate to one of your product pages and you’ll see the vertical navigation menu to the left of the product.

F). For Andrew only
1). Go back to the product you edited and remove the edit I suggested in the previous post.

G). Go to the fridge
1). You are all done, grab a cold one!

Cheers,

Steve

Steve, absolutely fantastic post, thanks for putting it together!

Andrew give it a try and let us know how you get on. As always make a full back up before hand as a just in case worst case scenario.
