Hi,

I have completed 90% of the Ultimo tutorials and would really appreciate any feedback on how my site looks and functions at present. The site is http://www.giggleberries[dot]net and is intended to supersede my live site giggleberries co uk.

I have set the top three images on the home page (below the sliders) and the ‘Our Featured Designer Brands’ section to be hidden when viewed on mobile devices so that only the related item blocks display.

Cheers

Hi James

I’ve had a good look round your site. The homepage is great, not too much going on, but enough to interest me in what your selling and move deeper into the site. Really like your colour scheme you got going on. Nice strong product images and plenty of detail about the items being sold.

There is however a downside to your site that would prevent me from buying from you. When I purchase from a site that’s not a well known retailer, then I like to know who I’m buying from and who is behind it. You don’t have any company information in footer to tell me if your a company or sole trader, I could be wrong, but this I think is a legal requirement.

Also where do I find you or how do I speak to you? I would not buy from a site where there is no contact phone number to speak to them and also where there is no address published. I looked through your pages and couldn’t see any details of your company address of where you trade from, again I think this is a legal requirement.

Hope this helps you out. Overall it’s a nice looking site and I’ve booked marked you for future shopping.

Jon

Hey James,

The site is looking good, I see you made the changes Jon suggested, good job.

I like the site, it’s clean and has a premium feel to it, the colour scheme works well, the menu’s look really good, as do the product pages.

I would say if you are interested on the 19th April myself and Matt are doing another website workshop in the Mastermind Webinar https://understandinge.com/mastermind-schedule-2016/ and if you would be interested you can submit your site and we will do a proper run down of it live?

Hi James

Great looking site. Jon and Dave have already given some very valuable feedback.

I’m also looking to migrate our site to the Magento platform. Here are my thoughts from someone coming from a different platform and thinking more in terms of conversions.

1. We are in an age where the disease of free delivery doesn’t help us small business owners. If you are offering free delivery, why hide that at the bottom of the home page (unless those are standard Ultimo block positions)? I’d suggest putting that at the top of the home page.

2. Similarly, on the product page, why not show your 4 “Why buy from us?” points more prominently above the related item block? I suppose it depends on what you consider to be more important: conversions or higher order value.

3. You’ve removed the “estimate shipping and tax” block in the cart because you offer free UK delivery and this leads to a cleaner look to the shopping cart. However, you only offer free delivery for UK orders above £50. For orders below £50, there is a charge and that unexpected shock will only hit them once they get to stage 4 of the checkout process, possibly leading to cart abandonment. People hate unexpected charges. I know you have a delivery charge tab on the product page but not everyone looks at that. Why not (a) state it more clearly on the product page together with the minimum value for free delivery (use the “primary column bottom” block?) (b) reinstate the “estimate shipping and tax” block in the cart so that people will clearly see what they will need to pay before they get further into the checkout process.

4. Just a minor point … looks like you’re using US locale (“Add to cart” etc). Wouldn’t it be better to use UK locale (“Add to basket”)? The en_GB locale file doesn’t exist on the Magentoconnect site anymore but this guy has done the hard work for us. http://www.lightnest.co.uk/mag…..uage-pack/ The only issue I see with using the UK locale is that you’ll need to change the cart icon to a basket icon.

Just some suggestions … I am, by no means, an expert at any of this.

Hi Tester1

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a helpful and detailed review.

I thought it would be nice to promote free delivery and other USP’s just below the menu bar as shown in the image below. Do you have any idea how I would add an additional static block in this area?

nice looking site , congrat !

some tech seo details to fix:

1. remove and fix 404:
http://giggleberries.net/blog/
http://giggleberries.net/ultim…..nto-theme/
http://giggleberries.net/cookies-policy/
http://giggleberries.net/about…..emo-store/

2. Create a valid robots.txt file
3. Create a valid sitemap and make sure it gets indexed by the search engines
4. Youre site has NOINDEX – remove and fix that before goin live
5. www and non-www versions are not fixed on your website. Correct this to ensure that search engines do not keep two website versions in their index.
6. Some of your titles are longer than 55 characters.
7. Some of your website pages have identical (or duplicate) descriptions.
8. Some meta descriptions on your website are longer than 155 characters. They will be cut by search engines and as a result will look unappealing to users

Not sure what you mean by fixing the 404?

Also, how do I get rid of the pages as I can seem to find them in cms/pages

How do I fix the www and non-www versions?

Sorry James (Jim?). I’m not an expert on Ultimo. I’m still trying (in my very limited spare time) to decide which theme to choose. May be other Ultimo users will chime in.

I have however looked at the Ultimo user manual in a bit of details. So, just based on that, would “block_header_nav_dropdown” work?

Failing that, you could go for a specific extension. “Static blocks everywhere” by aheadworks looks pretty flexible but does cost as much as Ultimo itself.

By the way, I forgot to mention in my last message. Your site is quite slow. I’m using Simple Servers standard shared hosting to host the magento installation that I’m playing around with and it’s reasonably fast. Our current site is really really fast but that’s because it’s HTML-based with an add-on cart; not database driven. People have commented on how fast it is and I strongly believe the speed of a site will also affect conversions. I’m looking at Magento because maintaining an HTML site has become too much of a burden.

Good luck!

Best to ask youre developer to put this code into .htaccess:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(?!www\.)(.+) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.%1/$1 [R=301,NE,L]

Ah, well done tester1.

Just remembered I have a licence agreement for the Aheadworks extension ‘Z Blocks’

Thanks Matjaz,

In the top level directory there is a .htaccess and a .htaccess.sample.

I have made a copy of the .htaccess and pasted your code at the bottom as shown below.

Does this look correct or do you still recommend I get a developer to do it?

You shuld put RewriteCond it before, not at end

Here is SAMPLE (dont blindly copy please) of optimazed htaccess for Magento (beside www/nowww it contains all other optimized settings):

https://github.com/Creare/magento-htaccess/blob/master/.htaccess

but please … be carefull and DO backup before any edit !
