Tip: Showing more items in Admin - altering default 20, 30, etc. with Enhanced Admin Grids

I asked a question recently at the Mastermind Webinars about how on earth to stop Magento showing the default 20 items in any of the Admin views. Whatever I did just wasn’t working, even after the tips I’d been given on how to change the grid.phtml file as specified here: http://magento.stackexchange.c…..order-grid

I cleared caches, cookies, logged out and in again, etc., but the changes I’d made just would never show.

But! I have just found out why and the answer is so simple! It turns out that the changes aren’t showing because I have Enhanced Admin Grids installed and as this does it’s own customised thing for page views, this has a special setting for the default number of items to show and this setting makes the whole process a doddle.

So, if you have the extension installed, just go to System > Custom Grids > Base Configuration, and under Customization Parameters – Default Values > Custom Pagination Values and just add in your desired values. I’ve used 100, 200, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and it’s all now working fine.

As an added bonus, the box underneath allows you to set the default value to show on going to a new page in Admin, I’ve set mine to 250 and now no more annoying limited 20 items at a time views which I was continually resetting to something more useful all the time.

Just as an added note to avoid confusion for others, I undid any of the changes I initially made in the grid.phtml file (as per the first suggested method). They are not needed at all and indeed would be potentially overwritten on any Magento updates. Just make the changes in Enhanced Admin Grids, that’s all you have to do.

Tris, question for you – do you find it takes a while to load the grid when showing 250?

I used to set 200 at a time, but found there wasn’t much need once I filtered to get the orders I wanted, combined with the ‘select all’ button (which selects all orders which match the current filters). Showing 20 orders was a fair bit faster than showing 200.

Hi Jim

To be honest, I don’t have 250 products/items to show in the lists yet, let alone 2,000! And there’s no way I’m as advanced in business as you when needing to sort orders by filtering or other means for my few sales per week at the moment.

However, looking at my main Magento Manage Products list there are 164 products and that list loads within a second, so it’s not seeming to slow down things although I was wondering what things might be like with 1,000 or 2,000 items to show.

I was thinking I should put 25 and 50 back in the list of possibilities in case they are ever needed but so far, no problem being set at default view of 250

Testing the speed just now in a new browser with uncached resources (Opera for a change), the text elements of the Manage Products page loaded fast but the thumbnail images took a second or two longer to pull through for those 164 products.

For that Manage Products page I have about 20 columns showing in Enhanced Admin Grids, with the 100px thumbnails and any html description encoding showing in at least two of the columns all on a large screen, fast computer, fast internet connection and hosted with SimpleServers who do seem to be fast and responsive. I don’t as yet have any of your Moogento products so I don’t know if they might make a difference to overall speed and resource demands?

So, I’m finding the default view set at 250 to not be a problem at the moment and it’s really useful being able to show everything in one go and stops me potentially forgetting about some things that may not show on lists when set to the default 20 items per page. For instance, I have 69 M2EPro Policies set up and I can now thankfully see them all at once instead of having to change the View per page value each time I visit there.

COLUMN SORT ORDER?
Now all I want is a way for the default column sorting order of those lists to be in my chosen way. For instance, many of the lists seem to default to their creation date rather than alphabetical, so, for example I prefixed my M2E Policies with a sorting number but they never appear in the right order by default. And it’s the same in various dropdown menus in various parts of the Mag/M2e interfaces, so it sometimes takes me a moment to mentally adjust and filter through what’s available.

SELECT-ALL BUG?
One other annoying (or possible bug) and potentially error prone thing I found with the default view of 20 items was that in one on my M2E Listing “Groups” I had something like 25 products and I needed to remove most of them. I thought they were all showing but it was just the default 20. To save me time I used the Select All option and then un-ticked the ones I wanted to keep before choosing “Stop on eBay/Remove from listing”. This however seemed to be my mistake as it seems the Select All had also invisibly selected the remaining 5 of the full 25 (but only 20 showing) and stopped those extra 5 at the same as those chosen out of the viewable 20!

I’m pretty sure that is what happened because some things did disappear that shouldn’t have but you’ll appreciate it’s hard to double checked or verify that bug/feature without screwing things up further.

Slower :)

fwiw When I first started out with Magento on my first store, I spent a lot of time customising this kind of thing. A few months later I kind wished I’d saved myself the bother!
Your aim is likely to get more sales, so once that is realised then seeing 250 orders I think will be annoying, as you’ll be doing things like:
– searching for a specific order to reply to a customer query
– sorting by processing orders/cancelled orders/orders with a specific sku
All those searches will take longer if you’re showing 250 instead of say 25.

I don’t as yet have any of your Moogento products so I don’t know if they might make a difference to overall speed and resource demands?

Shouldn’t do, but bigger grids will generally take longer, and will use more server resources (eg. if you’re caching database responses, which you probably are, then you’ll need to set aside more server memory to cache bigger result sets. That increased use of memory may then take away memory from other uses, such as serving up pages for ew site visitors – but this probably comes under the category of ‘good problem to have’).

So, I’m finding the default view set at 250 to not be a problem at the moment and it’s really useful being able to show everything in one go

Great, at the end of the day if you have found a system that enables you to process orders faster, and get on with the business of growing your business, then you’re winning!

I want a way for the default column sorting order of those lists to be in my chosen way.

shipEasy has this built in, for Order Grid.

This is correct, and will help you if you end up showing 25 orders at a time, out of a result set of 100/1000/10,000 – you then have the fast grid refresh/display and can select all eg. 10,000 orders in one click, without needing to go through 50 pages @ 200/page.

shipEasy adds in Select All, Unselect All, Add Visible to Selection which might help.

Good luck with your store.

Thanks Jim
Good points about server load and what the real aims of running a Magento store are. I shall bear those things in mind as I expand my sales and knowledge.

For the moment though with minimal things to worry about in terms of quantity of sales, number of products and actual site visitors, it’s not really an issue I have to deal with yet and having everything showing at once is so much nicer.

But I do hear what you have said and will adjust when/if I expand.

Many thanks for your input.
