I am new to magento and have just had my magento website designed, We have not uploaded or installed any services as yet.
We are looking for advice on the best way to setup our magento build based on the services we will be using below.

Hosting:
We will be using simple servers to host the magento site but need advice and the best options to install based on the services we use.

Real time Stock Control:
We would like to integrate the following into magento, all stock would need to be split and controlled in real time across all sites, I’ve heard channel unity mentioned and also m2epro.

Ebay
Amazon
Rakuten – play
Website – magento

Order management:
Is the something that can be managed well within m2epro or channel unity or is there are better way?

Postage:
We currently use the following postage companies.

Royal Mail
Parcel Force
City Link
Is there one product that works with all of these shipping options or will I need separate modules?

Accounts:
Currently we us xero for accounting but not sure how well this would work in magento, I would be interested if anyone had good experience using another company for accounting within magento.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Howdy Gman,

I’ll do my best to answer your questions below and if you need clarification or have any more, just ask :)

I am new to magento and have just had my magento website designed

Congrats!

Real time Stock Control:
We would like to integrate the following into magento, all stock would need to be split and controlled in real time across all sites, I’ve heard channel unity mentioned and also m2epro.

Stock control is rarely “Real Time” with any 3rd party software, there is always a lag. Typically this is expected to be in the 20-30 minute window regardless of software used (this allows 15 mins for a change to be picked up and 15 mins for it to be actioned).

There is a fundamental difference between Channel Unity and M2E Pro. Channel Unity has a flat fee of £15 a month and 1% of each sale. M2E Pro is subsidised by eBay and is currently free. Amazon we are expecting to move to a paid model later this year. Which should be a fixed fee (as for how they’ll chop it, not sure).

Focusing upon your sales channels, Ebay, Amazon, Rakuten – play, Website – magento. M2E pro can cover these. Each of the sales channels has it’s own quirks, but basically UnderstandingE is about using Magento as the base for your inventory & order management system and then hooking up to the sales channels using extensions, such as M2E Pro.

Order management:
Is the something that can be managed well within m2epro or channel unity or is there are better way?

Depends on your needs, if you’re doing a squillion orders then £25,000 for OrderWise would be a bargain, however I’m guessing that’s not the case and Magento with one or two extensions can be adapted to be a decent order processing system (it isn’t out of the box). Expect to budget around £150 for this.

Postage:
We currently use the following postage companies.
Royal Mail
Parcel Force
City Link

There are quite a few options here, you could go with direct integrations or use something like Metapack. We’re working on the order guides for UnderstandingE next week, couriers won’t be in the first release of order guides but they’ll quickly follow.

Accounts:
Currently we us xero for accounting but not sure how well this would work in magento, I would be interested if anyone had good experience using another company for accounting within magento.

Carrytheone, it costs £19.99 a month and they have a seamless integration to Xero. Which reminds me, I need to give the chaps a call there next week and get us hooked up on a demo account so we can get the latter part of the guides for accounting done also.

Does that help you?

Hi Matt

Thanks for the advice, looks like its m2epro then.
Carry the one I’ve emailed. Also getting my accountant to check them out, nice to see they are willing to customize if needed.

Regarding the order management do you have any guides as yet?
And how soon are the guides out for the couriers, I’m not in a rush were not looking to launch until March so we have plenty of time to install and test everything.

First of all, good luck, Magento is super powerful and you’ve made a good decision to use it.

Secondly, I have to put in a quick plug for my extensions here! I made them after struggling with Magento default setup to manage and process orders. shipEasy will help you manage your orders in a way that is just…obvious. pickPack will help you to produce useful business printouts for yourself and your customers, like great-looking PDFs to pack with your shipments, CSVs for shipping and accounting, and a heap more.

Matt and Dave have done a great job with the guides here, so a good ‘first step’ is now to run through those as well!

  • pickPack - smarter Magento packing sheets and warehouse picklists
  • shipEasy - process multiple orders with no sweat & get a visual sales overview easily

I can vouch for both of those extensions from Jim, worth every penny. Have the updates been implemented for Ebay user ID search yet Jim?

With regards to courier integration, I use Xtento’s extension which I have integrated with City Link. I’m sure they can integrate with all of those you have mentioned without any problems
