Hi Everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations or advice on POS systems that can be used in conjunction with Magento.

I currently have Microsoft POS and it serves our needs as far as our retail store goes. The database is locked down so much that I have only found 1 supplier who offers a website that links into the DB. The price of this was too much for our little business so we carried on with what we have.

I have seen that Boost my shop have a POS solution and with the integrated ERP solution, this would more or less replace what we have now. BUT is there anything else out there, I also prefer 1 off payments not keen on the monthly subscription options as they usually work out really expensive. We have thousands of products and most of them are based on how many products you have, but when the products are mainly below £10 you have to sell a hell of a lot to justify it (and we don’t at the moment).

Looking forward to seeing what others use.

Hi Dave,

We haven’t delved too deeply into POS yet but last year the guys at eBizmarts gave me a their POS app to try which was really cool, I still have the Beta on my iPad so I would recommend looking into those guys :)

Hi Dave,

Thanks for this. On the face of it they look ok, just a couple of niggles for me to get over.

Firstly I would rather pay a one of fee for the software than pay every month, I know that this means it’s always supported etc etc. but I’m an old school guy and enjoy ownership :). I always think about what would happen if they just closed up shop, (I worked through the tech bubble, in the tech sector). Would I be left with a till that didn’t work any more.

Next it looks like it is only available on iPads, which will mean replacing the Window terminal I currently have.

Only small niggles and I can probably get over them if I have to. It seems that paying for software by the month is becoming common place, which I might have to get used to.

Hi Dave,

No worries at all, it might not be suitable for your business but I have spoke to a few businesses using it and they seem to love it. But of course it’s not for every business. I imagine we will stumble upon POS in more detail later this year.

As for monthly software fees. I totally understand, ownership is a nice thing to have. The problem of course with software and Magento extensions is that as updates come out the code is going to need to be tweaked and kept up to date to maintain functionality. Also the same story with support and feature requests. This is going to take CS staff and developers which costs money. Therefore having the monthly income model makes the maintenance and growth of the software much more likely :)
