Howdy Dom,
Errr I’m not sure, try popping the question on here http://magento.stackexchange.com/ with the error messages you had above and see what you get back.

Hi Dom,
I was thinking about this last night, just check the user permissions that you have in your user account in System > Permissions > Users to see that role you have and then check in the same menu for roles.
I’ve seen web development companies restrict owners from having compete access before, so that’s where that came from as it sounds like the whole menu option is missing and access rights would do that.
Also another option is to run the compiler from the commandline using SSH. This will get geeky quickly so if you’ve never even heard of SSH this won’t be for you.
The compiler is in the shell folder and you’d run something like this to see the state:
This to disable
This to clear the files
The other commands are here:
state Show Compilation State
compile Run Compilation Process
clear Disable Compiler include path and Remove compiled files
enable Enable Compiler include path
disable Disable Compiler include path
help This help
You will need your geek hat on for that one :)

Oh and if all that Fails, do what @Calum Roberts suggests as it’s probably easier

Hi Dom,
Is that trying to run the compiler? If the current state is compiled, disable it and clear and see if that gets you back running again.
Oh and I hate SSH too, dangerous in the wrong hands, I changed the file permissions on a whole dedicated server once.
Matt

Callum i would love to, i have changed numerous files had numerous extensions and custom extensions added. Only way to do this is to disable every extension and work it that way.

Howdy Dom,
I’m really not sure on this one, I can only really suggest that you have a developer look at this for you.
