what would be the best workflow for creating a staging environment for testing new extensions / updates etc..?

I just found the following tutorial, what do you think about it? Setting Up A Magento Staging Area

But there is still one thing I dont know: after adding some new changes on the staging area, what would be then the best way to make them work on live server again? Switching the database to live? But then maybe some orders and stats are going being lost of the live system in the meanwhile. Would it be better to notice what changes I’ve made on staging area to follow them on live server after they seems to work welll? What is your workflow for magento developement? Thanks!

Greetings from Germany

Hey Sebastian

Welcome aboard :)

I have had a quick look at the tutorial and to me it looks a little bit too codey for my liking. With the hosting providers that we are recommending they come with cPanel. Within cPanel we also have a feature called Installatron and this allows you to clone your Magento system.

We do have a tutorial coming out on this but it is part of the Premium course for “Designing a Magento Website on a budget of $100″

In short you can test in your cloned system and if all goes well, you would backup your main system and make the changes in there.

Does that make sense?
