Hi Matt
I noticed with Simple Servers i have to SSH into my system to get Mag Connect Manager to work.

I followed this https://www.simpleservers.co.uk/clients/whmcs/knowledgebase/24/How-to-resolve-the-file-permissions-error-in-Magento-Connect-Manager.html part 1 worked fine and allowed Mag Connect Manager to work properly ie correct file permissions.
But when i reverted my whole system crashed front and back with stacks of errors.

I had to re run part again and got back in. Has anybody had similar issues ?
I think the errors were relating to missing files not being present and write permissions, but obviously the tutorial is correct.
But SS tech said it was because i had done manual editing re Magmi so not sure.

I am now having to run will all directories in writable state?

P.S I was told to SSH in a run -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \; && find -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \; to reset file permissions. But i don’t want to screw up Magmi

Update Got it going again eventually but quick note in my case i had to reset Magmi permissions on 3 directories when using the file reset options on the above tutorial.
I am a sure there is another way but not sure

Cheers Dale

Hi Dale,

The manual editing on Magmi was on one folder and sub directories of that folder, so you can rule that out completely.

Running the command above resets the file permissions on all files and folders, so remember to change the magmi ones accordingly so it can run.

Hello folks

I tried to upgrade Magento to 1.8 but did something wrong and have now got a 500 error both front and backend. I made a back up – so that is OK – but the back up is at work and I am now at home with flu trying to catch up on my work. Is there anything I can try to do to get my site back? I have tried changing the permissions as a forum post suggested but that hasn’t worked. Any help gratefully received.

All the best

Gillian

Further update to the post above …

I reset the permissions again (755) and had some partial success – the site reverted to the maintenance page. I then deleted the maintenance flag file in the root folder and the site has partially returned. The admin looks fine – apart from an indexing error. But the front end is not displaying at all … just showing an error

Front End
I had the Fatal error: Class ‘Mage__Helper_Data’ not found in /home/homeinte/public_html/app/Mage.php on line 546 and tried simply replacing this from a back up file but it is not making any difference). Next, I read that clearing the chache file would help. And it did!
I cleared the var/cache folder (well, I renamed it cache_old) and that sorted the front end … phew, I have my site back.

So now, here are my errors ….

Admin
Cannot initialize the indexer process.
(This is where all my problems started)

System Magento Connect – 500 server error

Any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

500 errors are tricky as that’s the web server saying “huh?” at you.

Normally the best place to start is with file permissions, they’re normally the problem and as you mention Magento connect, the Magento connect manager in the downloader folder is normal a problem for most when it comes to file permissions.

For the indexer, really not sure. It could be anything from a row being too large to an error in the database. I’m not sure if you’ve ever used SSH before, running the indexer.php in the shell directory manually and seeing what it tells you would help you identify the reason.

There are two guides here http://www.atwix.com/magento/p…..mand-line/ and here http://inchoo.net/ecommerce/ma…..rom-shell/ which do need you to be a little nerdy.

As a wild suggestion, maybe asking your web hosting provider to run them and report back the errors might be an idea?

Magento Connect 500 Server Error

Setting index.php inside of Downloader folder to 644 worked and this is now operating normally.

Thanks.

Hi Matt

]Thank you for the help … I am now officially a nerd! I managed to access my Magento site via shell and reindexed the catalo_product_price which worked excellently.

Now that this problem has been fixed, all the other problems I had with some of the products not showing up on the front end have also fixed.

What a sense of achievement! I have never used putty before but the guides you pointed me to worked like a charm.

Thanks so much

Gillian

Great news Gillian, this is great to hear. You can’t beat that feeling of achievement when you fix something like this…for me these moments are few and far between!

So well done, :D
