Hi
I sell on ebay uk at the moment. Eventually I will be selling on most of the ebay sites (Different languages), Amazon as well as a website.
I am unsure as to the best way to set up the attribute sets. I have 3 different types of product, shoes, handbags and clothes. I am starting from scratch with Magento and planning for the future, I don’t want to do anything that makes it hard or time consuming when things change and grow. Am I better to set up 3 ebay specific groups in the default set (1 for each type of main product) or make 3 new groups based on the default and add the different ebay attributes to them? In the future there may be other groups that need to be added. Which is the best future proof method?
Regarding Magmi.
I have followed the guides and installed all of the example products via Magmi with success. I now want to create some simple products to upload via Magmi. I have 2 problems preventing me from doing that.
1. If the ebay item specific is att_eby_is_colour. Say the code for red is 234, I enter 234 onto the spread sheet, instead of red appearing in the product listing, I get the number 234 as a new ‘colour’ in the specific. Am I being really thick? When data is entered in this fashion it seems to happen with all of the ebay item specifics I’ve set up.
2. With regard the description. How should the description be added to the spreadsheet? If I enter the full description it takes up to much room on the sheet and makes the sheet hard to use. What is the way around this? Can I load the full description to my host via filezila and then put a link to to it on the sheet as per the method for images?
Thank you
Tim

Morning Tim,
Welcome aboard!
Let me answer those questions for you:

That’s the same approach as what I would do.
Break your products into the main categories, in your case handbags, clothes and shoes and build the attributes for each and then build the attribute sets.
The caveat to this is in the clothes categories on eBay, some categories have required attributes such as “Trouser Size” and “Chest Size” and if you’re intending to list variations into these categories then creating separate attribute sets would be prudent.
You’ll probably end up with attribute sets like this:
- Size
- Colour
- SizeColour
- Shoesize
- ShoesizeColour
- Trousersize
- TrousersizeColour
- Chestrsize
- ChestrsizeColour
1. If the ebay item specific is att_eby_is_colour. For normal attributes you can just enter their name, so Red, Pink etc…. rather than their numbers. The numbers come in handy with system attributes like status and is_in_stock.
2. With regard the description. How should the description be added to the spreadsheet? If I enter the full description it takes up to much room on the sheet and makes the sheet hard to use. Personally, I’d keep it in the same sheet and just resize the rows and columns accordingly in excel.
You could create a separate sheet for after the products are loaded, but to be honest I’d just keep it in the main sheet for ease.
Does that help you Tim?

Hi Matt
Thanks for the reply – Ref the attribute sets.
So with configurable products, you create and use a configurable set of specifics ie. SizeColour however if its a simple product then you always use the Default group?? If that’s the case thats great however when it comes to ebay item specifics to cover all of the different types of product, I could end up with a very long list in the default group which I want to avoid. I know in one of your guides you mention setting up different ebay groups within the default group ie. ebay IS Handbag or ebay IS Shoes. The problem I have with this is that if you’ve used a specific attribute ie.att_eby_is_brand. in one group you can’t use it in the other.
To get around the problem above I was going to create more default sets so that I would have Default, Default Handbag, Default Shoe etc. Does this sound like a sensible way to move forwards without complicating things too much?
One other thing is it possible to put a ‘Find my posts’ link on your forum home page somewhere?
You’re both doing a great job! – Thank you

Howdy Tim,
Magento is the framework for this and we’ve tried to keep it as straight forwards as possible. If it makes sense for you to create separate attribute sets or groups, then do it.

It’s already on here :) At the top of the forum, click on profile and there is a button to see all your posts.
