We are currently migrating our webstore from bigcommerce to magento. As we have a very large product range (65k) we have taken a cloud server with simpleservers.co.uk. Does any one recommend a good product import script as we have tried to use magnetic one store manager for magento but simpleservers.co.uk time out limit on there script keeps closing the bridge.php connect. We have spoken to there support but are still not getting any feedback and need to find another way to get round this issue.

Thanks Guys

Hi Chris,

Can you tell me a little more about the bridge.php script?

Also if it is timing out in a browser, have you tried it on the server commandline via ssh?

Thanks for the reply.

The bridge.php script is added to the root folder of your server it’s the connect between the desktop application and the website database. It send any data changes in the desktop application in batches to the database. You have to run the script from Store Manager. But when it tries to send the data it’s saying the script has times out. We have spoken to the guys who make the software and they have advise it’s a server setting. We are still waiting for simpleservers.co.uk to correct this issue.

As we are on a deadline to get this moved we are trying to find another solution as you cannot speak to the above server guys and have to wait a number of hours before you get a reply to tickets.

Hi Chris,

Yea let’s be fair here you are trying to send it a load of products and I’m not surprised it is timing out.

Try setting these values just after the opening <? in the script:

ini_set(‘post_max_size’,’3096M’);
ini_set(‘upload_max_filesize’,’3096M’);
ini_set(‘max_execution_time’,’9999999′);

And see if that works. Also check your error log to see what the actual problem is, whether it is file size, timeout or something else.

Also I would be thinking, is there a way you don’t have to send so many products in one hit, can smaller batches be sent?

Hi

Were not trying to send all 65k products all at once we are trying to upload in 5k batches. We have even drop it down to just 10- 20 products and still get the same issue.

Hi Chris

So you have been breaking them down into batches and still having the problem, as Matt suggested above have you had a loom in the error log to see what it is that is causing the problem?

Thanks for the updates guys.

It turns out there is an issue with lightspeed on this cloud server and simpleservers.co.uk are trying to fix the issue.

Hi Chris,

Ah at least the problem is now known :)

Wouldn’t mind seeing what you’re actually doing once you have it working as migration is on our todo list post launch in January. if that’s ok with you?

Hi Matt

Thanks for your assistance.

Can i ask who you would recommend for hosting a large Magento store 65K as simpleservers.co.uk are unable to fix this issue with lightspeed and it looking like we will have to move on.

Hi Chris,

If the problem you’re having is with lightspeed then it sounds like you’ll run into the same problem with any other hosting company that is using it.

Tim at evohosting is an alternative however I’m pretty sure they run off lightspeed as well. For shared hosting simpleservers is the suggestion from us, so my question is, are you looking for shared hosting, a VPS or dedicated server instead?

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

Due to the size of our product range a share server is not an option so we would look to take a cloud or dedicated server.

Hi Chris,

Ok, direct question: are you unhappy with the support that simpleservers have given you and would like an alternative or are they still an option?

Hi

We would happy if the system worked but as an alternative then another provider, as the object of the exercise is for our system to work and produce the results required.

Hi Chris,

In which case a VPS would be the next step up, but make sure that it has either Apache with Varnish Cache on the front of it (varnish is for speed, also Apache is suggested for compatibility) or nginx. Also to pick a hosting provider that has experience with Magento as a default installation won’t cut it for Magento, so I’m thinking http://www.simpleservers.co.uk…..ps-hosting or Ben from Sonassi here https://www.sonassihosting.com/magento-hosting/shared (as they use Apache)

If you can export the products to a straight csv, it should be fairly simple to edit the attributes to import direct into Magento. Importing 5k products at a time will probably take minutes with Magmi. 65k products and the likely traffic from that I would assume that a dedicated server is the go, and simpleservers are usually up there with the recommendations. I run smaller stores and had good experience with linode.com for VPS. They have an easy-to-use backend, simple with multiple VPS, and support replies under 3 minutes…
