How do I duplicate images from configurable to simple products?

Hi,

I have notice that once I have created a configurable product and add the associated simple products the product images uploaded to the configurable product are not duplicated to the associated simple product when I use the ‘Quick Simple Product Creation’ on the ‘associated products’ tab. Consequently I am having to go in to each associated simple product and upload the related product images again.

Is there anyway around this so that the images uploaded to the configurable product are duplicated across when I quick create the associated simple product?

Thanks

Howdy James,

I’ve not seen an extension that will do that for you, however I am thinking that Excel would be easier here, as you would just duplicate the rows, which would have the image links and create them that way.

Does that help you?
(Maybe a daft question as we’re missing the part where we show you how to import products to Magento right now)

Thanks for the reply Matt.

You are probably right in that importing the link is the easiest. I haven’t got around to adding products via a tab delineated import sheet and always add them manually via admin.

The sheer number of column heading on the import sheet always seems a bit daunting to me.

Hi James,

Just had a quick look for extensions that might do this, nothing appears to be out there, just notes to removing duplicate images (which would be a concern with massive catalogues of products). One for the idea’s bank.

For CSV importing, it’s not scary, especially if we colour code the heading line :) We’ll be onto those guides in the next day or two ready for Jan :)

Cheers Matt.

Do you have to import all the column headers each time you import products or if for example you just want to update stock inventory levels do you only need to import a spreadsheet that has the sku column and the inventory quantity column?

Hi James,

Not 100% sure on the Magento dataflow manager, got fed up with it being too slow. Magmi is different, you can get away with just using “sku” and adding as many or as little columns you want after it.

Hmmm. Not sure if I dare try it in case I loose everything.

Hi James,

Are you using Magmi or the Magento dataflow import?

Magento dataflow import as I thought that was the only option. Never heard of Magmi. Just googled it and can see that it is a free piece of software.

Hi James,

It is indeed. Got the live versions of the installation wizard and updated interface for Magmi this, well yesterday morning now.

Needs a few minor tweaks and will be ready to rock!

I have the guides sketched out for this, hopefully be ready in the next few days too. Wouldn’t mind running them past you if you’re up for it?

Hi Matt.

I would be happy to do that.

I feel a bit like a jack of all trades and master of none at the moment as we (wife and I) try to meet influx of Xmas orders whilst also rolling out M2E Pro ebay and just getting ready to upload first listing group to Amazon having finally got my head around setting up appropriate attributes to provide me with the necessary export data to use in Amazon listing template.

Send what you have over and happy to look at it as and when as I do feel I need to also get to grips with Magmi.

Regards

Hi James,

Yea I know that feeling well, it’s why we’re trying our best to numb down some of the more complicated parts as best we can.

Been working on an attribute loader today which aim is to load in eBay recommended item specifics dynamically (would exponentially decrease the time it would take you to manually add these values).

I’m now wondering if the original idea of having a pre-built system would actually work and then focusing on the how to actually use it might be better. One for after January 1st :)
