I would like to see a guide on migrating to a different host!

Hi

I’ve just moved my hosting to a new provider this week and found it arduous to say the least! We’re still not functioning as well as prior to moving and I’ve had to pay developers to come in and help.

We lost access to our site for a few days, we made changes to the old site during propagation prompting a remigration, our mail accounts still aren’t working etc. Throughout this, I wasn’t really sure of the service I should expect from a host and often replies to tickets were one short technical sentence which didn’t help resolve the problem of a hosting layman.

Any guide on this would be great so that other users can avoid the nightmare week I’ve had!

Hi Alex,

The problem with such a guide is that there are too many hosts to consider and several different methods. The easiest way using using SSH and rysnc, but not all hosting providers offer SSH access, I think it would just get too deep too quickly I’m afraid.

Hi Matt,

No problem, I understand it’s a wide topic, maybe it could be specified to one or two particular hosting providers or just generalised? No worries it not, I’ve just hit wall after wall with it!

The mail problem was simply because they sent the settings instruction email to an account that was being migrated over to them so we never received it until they sent it through on a reply to a ticket after much wrangling back and forth – a little tip to use a separate personal email address during that process would’ve saved us hours of wasted time!
