Hi Matt/Dave,
I am familiar with standard SEO, so not asking for anything on that, but I watched a couple of YouTube videos about how SE’s can index Magento sites pages several times via different link routes within your site, which can give rise to ‘duplicate content’ problems.
The videos suggested not using the left nav filters – but I think they are very helpful for our customers…
so would really appreciate your input about this, and anything else that can help with organic search positions that is specific to Magento.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Fab question!

Ok from my point of view, I never write or do anything for a search engine, quality, unique content always wins (it’s the longer route, but it’s a route that is exactly what the search engines are looking for).

However I do appreciate that sometimes the issue does need to be forced and also note I’m not an SEO expert :)

For the most part only 10-20% of the page is going to be unique, images, title, description, plus there is going to be a lot of duplication in any eCommerce store and the moment you apply any filters, then the product is going to be duplicated.

I too like the layered navigation and it’s a common message to disable this for site speed or seo reasons, personally I feel it’s easier for customers to navigate and you’d have to have a “large” or “high traffic” site to be concerned about this, so for the most part, role with it, it helps.

Below are the settings for System > Configuration > Catalog > Search Engine Optimizations that I would personally suggest.

Also remember that Google is pretty smart as well, so while you are 100% going to have duplicate content on the site, because Magento is so widely used, Google specifically can work out what the page types are etc… They also help you by being able to write rules in Google Web Master Toos (see here https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en )

Does that help?
