I have a client who currently has an ebay store and I will be using UE method for them to manage their ebay store and I will also be setting up a website for them.

They sell custom name labels. Is it possible to setup a text field/s in ebay for customers to type in the ‘Name/s’ the would like on the label/s? Currently the customer has to put the details into the paypal screen or email separately to my client. This seems quite clunky.

I haven’t worked my way through all of the guides yet, so it might be obvious if I had done that.

Also, is it correct that I would start the process for the building of their website by first setting up the ebay listings with magento/m2e pro/magmi etc and then populate the website after that is working well?s

Hi Annette,

Customised products are always a challenge on eBay as there is no set process for customers to follow, it could be the checkout notes, PayPal notes, an email, phone call etc…

So the same challenge is with Magento & M2E Pro as well and yep it will be clunky to a degree. And if this is what they’re doing now, then this is probably the best route to take as with eBay directly or any 3rd party software, they can’t invent fields for the checkout process.

Yep, we’re using Magento for it’s backend features, inventory, stock control and order management. The by-product of this is that as you’re entering products in for the Marketplaces, then you are inadvertently building the inventory for the website too, it just needs to look pretty :)

Does that help you?

Thanks Matt,

Adding the option of ‘text field/s’ into an ebay listing for a ‘name’ or ‘font selection’ etc couldn’t be something that you could develop as a widget Matt? I’m sure many people would be interested in paying for such a thing. (However, I know it wouldn’t be on the top of your priority list!!).

I find it a bit archaic that there isn’t that option in ebay prior to checkout. I know there are extensions for Magento for it and the ecommerce software I have been using for many years has it built in to their system to add a text field if required.

Thanks also for the confirmation of the process to get things started.

Hi Annette,

Yea, while eBay does a really good job in most areas, customised products have always been a challenge.

You can add notes to an order in Magento (and any other system), it’s just getting them on there which will be the manual task.
