I have set the tax settings as per one of the first guides. Then went on to create a zones and rates and tax rules to deal with EU orders properly. Chose for all marketplaces orders to use Magento tax settings. Now, one bit i seem to be missing to make it perfect is VAT is being calculated on subtotal (on products basically) and no VAT is calculated on delivery charges, if any.

Should I associate both shipping and VAT 20% product tax classes with appropriate tax zone and rate? At the moment shipping tax class is not associated with any of my rules.

Hi Dimitri,

If you go to System > Configuration > Sales > Tax is the tax settings set to run on exvat or including vat?

Hi Matt, it’s incl. VAT, exactly the same as in your guide on this topic.

And here is how it looks on the order screen:

Hi Dimitri,

I’m really not sure I’m afraid.

Matt, did you manage to replicate this on your system though?

Also, how does Magento know what tax rate to charge on shipping tax class? At the moment i don’t believe my system does.

Hi Dimitri,

I haven’t looked at adding the settings to our test account.

Also, how does Magento know what tax rate to charge on shipping tax class? At the moment i don’t believe my system does.

This should be set in Settings > Config Tax settings and somewhere near the top from memory.

Solved it by assigning ‘VAT 20%’ tax class for shipping in config->sales->tax->Tax Class for Shipping. as a result ‘shipping’ tax class becomes absolete so may as well delete it.

Let me know if anyone has a better solution and why it could be better.

That has to work like Swiss watch because we have all sales and refund pushing automatically via API into our accounting software, and there can’t be any room for error when it comes to tax calculation in magento.

Hi Dimitri,

Just wanted to say thanks for the chat earlier, you helped loads and made the tax settings guides much easier for me (and anyone else that watches them).
