Hi Guys,

I couple a months/posts back you guys mentioned it was possible to setup a simple cron job that would run Magento re-index rather than having to do this manually. Would it be possible for you to share this?

Cheers

Howdy James,

I’ll whip together a quick video on this for you, will be great practice for the main Magento design guides :)

I need Dave’s input on this though, so will wait to catch him online today.

Cheers,

There is no rush. I have been re-indexing manually for months already.

Hi James,

We need to do it anyway and after 30 mins working on the slide deck I’m still not happy.

However to get you on the right lines….

Change the paths accordingly (php /var/www/public_html/shell/) for the code below and set them as instructed:

At 02:25 in the morning:

php /var/www/public_html/shell/indexer.php –reindexall > /dev/null 2>&1

This reindexes ALL them

Every hour at 5 minutes past the hour:

php /var/www/public_html/shell/indexer.php –reindex catalog_product_price,cataloginventory_stock > /dev/null 2>&1

This does the two most important ones prices and stock.

If you get stuck finding out what the path is, save this code to a php file called “pathchecker.php” and upload to your website root folder and then browse to it at yourdomain.com/pathchecker.php and it’ll tell you the path, just add “/shell/” to the end of it:

<?php
echo realpath(dirname(__FILE__));

Does that help?

Hi guys

Apologies I was away in Harrogate today and only just got some stable internet.

I have had a look over the slide deck but will need to chat with Matt about the complicated bits.

Will get this sorted as soon as possible

Hi Calum,

The cron jobs above are for the Magento indexing which isn’t part of the Magento cron.

Oh and that extension, rocks btw!

@Dave Furness we need to add that one to the store.

Hi All,

Thanks everyone for you input.

The coding bit looks a bit beyond me. Will the above extension do the job for me or am I best leaving it until the guides are available?

This is not an urgent issue for me.

Hi James,

The file attached below, unzip it and pop this in your websites root folder where you app, downloads etc.. folders are.

Then view it in your web browser, this will give you the paths you need to add and a screen shot of the timings for the cron jobs too.

Hi,

Can you give a step by step on how what to do after uploading the pathchecker in order to set up this cron job?

Thanks

Hi Alex,

This ideally needs to be in a full blown tutorial, however I’ll whip together an ad-hoc one for you now that will get you on the right lines without any fluff.

Will be back to you in ~60 mins.

Hi Alex,

See the video below.

One thing I didn’t mention why setting the full reindex to run at 02:25, this gives the other cron task 20 minutes to complete and 40 minutes for the reindexall option to complete before the catalog price & stocks kick in again at 03:05 in the morning.

Oh and of course you could set it up to run at specific times during the day and no reindex over night at all, just tweak the settings accordingly in the cron job timings.

Hi Matt

What happens if M2E Pro is running which runs every 5 minutes?

Howdy Chaps,

Glad it helped.

@Dale Holden it doesn’t matter a huge deal tbh, plus in the new update for M2E Pro they worked around the requirement for a cron job.

Hi Dale,

Leave them in, you need the Magento cron running for numerous other tasks, M2E Pro have just worked around the challange of the cron being required to be setup, you want the cron running for newsletters, log clearing etc…
